Did you know that the students at Andrew Avenue are helping to eliminate the idea of waste with the help of TerraCycle?

In one corner of our school cafeteria there is a collection box for empty juice pouches. At lunchtime, the students that drink every drop of the juice in their juice pouch drop the empty pouch into the collection box.

At the end of the school day, the collection box is emptied. Mrs. Janis slits the bottom of each juice pouch, rinses it with water and they air dry overnight. The pouches are bundled and then packed in boxes for shipment to the TerraCycle warehouse. The boxes are weighed when they arrive at the warehouse and Andrew Avenue is awarded approximately two cents for each pouch collected.

Any brand and any flavor of juice pouch is accepted. If any parent uses juice pouches at home, the empty pouches may be sent to school with your student.

Last year, Andrew Avenue shipped three boxes to TerraCycle and at least one qualified for bonus points. The November 2014 shipment contained 954 pieces and earned 1908 points, the February 2014 shipment contained 952 pieces and earned 1904 points and the final shipment in June contained 1262 pieces and earned 2524 points. Points can be redeemed in 1,000 increments for a $10 cash donation to the school.

It is a lot of work for a relatively small donation but it does keep the pouches out of local landfills. Instead, TerraCycle turns them into "upcycled" products that can be ordered through DwellSmart.
