Nancy Sasso Janis was co-valedictorian of the 1981 graduating class of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield where she received her BA in Spanish and Elementary Education Certification. Mrs. Janis student taught in a first grade in a public school in Stratford and then taught first grade for two years and six months at St. Gabriel School in Milford.

During the 1986-1987 school year she taught full-day kindergarten at St.Vincent Ferrer Primary School in Naugatuck. The next year she began her career in the Naugatuck system at Prospect Street Elementary School where she taught morning kindergarten and remedial students. The next year she taught morning kindergarten and Chapter I remedial reading at Salem Elementary School and earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Sacred Heart University. 

Mrs. Janis taught first grade at Maple Hill Elementary School for 25 years, since the school opened in 1989. She served as webmaster of the Maple Hill web site after Rebecca Sciacca stepped down as principal. 

 Mrs. Janis moved to first grade at Andrew Avenue in 2014. 

 



Bio

Nancy Sasso Janis has been a first grade teacher in Naugatuck for 30 years. This year she welcomes her 34rd group of first grade or kindergarten students. This past summer she was a teacher for the Ready, Set, Go program for incoming kindergarten students held at Naugatuck High School. 

Mrs. Janis grew up in Stratford and has lived in Naugatuck since the early eighties. She is the mother of three sons. Nicholas is 33, Adam is a 2014 graduate of Kaynor Tech and Christian "C.J." is a sophomore at Western CT State University. 

Mrs. Janis has long been a patron of the arts. She can often be seen singing in various churches and occasionally on TV on the daily Celebration of the Eucharistic on WCCT-TV. She got a lead harmony vocals and creation credit on a CD recorded by singer/songwriter Robert Jones entitled 'Above Here.' 

She also frequents local theaters for a wide variety of productions. She secured her first acting credit when she appeared in the 2006 Maple Hill production of 'Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr!' under the direction of Dave Gardino. She played the lead role of a brand new teacher renamed Pearl Morton and performed the final song "Interjections." More recent credits include Martha in the Phoenix Stage  Company production of 'The Last Supper: A Musical Enactment' in March 2012 and Maria and Meg in 'Bad Auditions by Bad Actors' in the PSC-produced reader's theatre at the Whittemore Library (May 2012.) Mrs. Janis is the author of a musical for children entitled 'Lessons in Mother Goose' that she hopes to produce in the future.

She is a contributer to Naugatuck Patch and other local Patch sites, where she shares her opinion of the many entertainment events that she attends with the intention of encouraging readers to support the arts. She is also a member of Connecticut Critics Circle.
